Material strategy · A consumer products company

Should we change our packaging material strategy?

Understand whether competitors’ moves into paper-based packaging signaled a lasting market shift and what that meant for investment in new packaging lines.

The evidence and analysis

Expert and stakeholder interviews examined competitor intentions, material performance and the practical requirements of changing packaging lines.

The interviews examined whether visible competitor launches were tests of selected applications or preparations for broader adoption. They probed the reasons for those moves and the constraints on extending them.

The analysis brought market signals together with the practical demands of packaging production and use, separating the appeal of the material from the conditions needed to adopt it.

What the work clarified

The study found that paper’s consumer appeal came with machinery, durability and cost constraints. Investment therefore required understanding where the material could work reliably at scale.

What this meant for the decision

Before committing to new lines, the client needed to test where paper could meet application requirements at an acceptable cost. Competitor introductions helped frame those questions.
