What makes a customer qualify, choose or switch a supplier?

Understand how technical requirements shape buying decisions and the conditions under which a supplier can win business.

The evidence and analysis

Expert interviews connected product specifications and processing needs with qualification, switching barriers, supply assurance and customization.

The research explored how technical and procurement considerations enter the same buying decision. A technically suitable product still had to fit the customer’s approval process and operating requirements.

Probing those requirements helped distinguish product-performance needs from reliability, service and the practical barriers to testing or switching a supplier.

What the work clarified

Product specifications, technical approval, supply reliability and downstream qualification requirements all shaped supplier choice.

What this meant for the decision

Commercial positioning needed to address the path to qualification as well as product performance. Understanding that path helps focus development and sales effort on what customers require to consider a change.
